The Cat, Dog complex Pt.2
In this article, I wanna talk about the cat, dog mentality affecting people in the workforce. There is a military cultural construct in NY. (I can't speak for the rest of the country). A friend of mine also said Texas has a similar culture. There's a tone that is set by managers and supervisors to subordinates. You have the same set up in terms of how people are treated at work to how people are treated in the military. Based on the position you are in at work is how you are 'Ranked'. If you're new, you're a rookie so you have to deal with the bullshit that comes with being new. This is fine if you have the dog mentality. You accept and understand that you have to earn being worthy of better things. This is far from okay when you have the mindset of a cat. As mentioned in part 1 of the cat dog complex cats see their owners as mutual partners in their relationship. Once a cat feels the mutual respect that their owner doesn't feel superior to them, they show the human owner the same love and respect back that they receive. The same goes for people who display similar traits. That person that spazzes out and rebels cause the supervisor barked orders at them isn't being intolerable. They are simply displaying traits that require you to approach them differently. Not everyone gives you the same results when you deal with them the same. If you scream at one person and they give you positive results that don't mean the next person will give you the same results and what makes that hard for people to accept is that others who have been abused with the same ear-bashing to get results will turn and say "well I had to go through it so you should too". Just cause you went thru it doesn't mean it was okay and just cause you took it doesn't mean the next person should. The way you man manage individuals is extremely important if you wanna achieve the best result. Man(Woman) management is extremely important. Managing people as individuals instead of numbers or groups creates a more relatable manager. I'm not saying let your employees walk all over you but what I'm saying is make sure that you treat each individual the way they deserve to be treated. If you have a disrespectful employee then, by all means, bark as many orders as you see fit but if you see you have employees you can get results from by a simple request then do that. Instead of barking orders they may not even perform as well as they possibly could if you approach them in the wrong way. its all about learning individuals strengths and weaknesses.
Take football/futbol for example. There are players that if you apply pressure you will get a great player and then there are players that need you to encourage them in a more subtle way to get results. The player that needs you to uplift him instead of tearing him down for results.
Pressure makes diamonds but pressure can also break fine China.Meaning, not all things need a harsh impact to bring value and success. The same thing applies in the work environment but because most people are working a job and not in a career this understanding goes amiss. Still, if employers took up this understanding employment turnover would be lower and the environment of working would be more tolerable. The cat, dog mentality is the battle we're facing in society right about now. conform or be seen as a rebel a problem but it doesn't have to be like that. Everyone is different so different people need different approaches. Employers must understand that treating everyone like dogs will always leave them unsatisfied and searching for better results. Employers need to also understand their attitude is what creates the culture at work for other employee's to feel like they need to treat newer employees with the same attitude. This isn't something I see changing soon, in fact, I see it getting worse. My message to anyone who feels like they don't want to deal with supervisors who have this type of attitude is to pull them to the side and remind them they are dealing with a human being before an employee. They are dealing with a person before an employee I.D. Manners and respect go a long way in creating a sensible, healthy work atmosphere. Company owners should invest in better conduct training for managers and supervisors and remind them and everyone that the humane aspect of working is more important now than it's ever been.
