Album Review: Larry June - Spaceships On The Blade
Happy 20 20 Free everyone.
A new year but I wanted to start of this year with an album review for a project that came out the back end of last year.
Spaceships on the blade is a Project that came out by one of my favorite artist Larry June.
The San Fransisco native is one of the hottest artist out. His signature "lazy flow" Frisco lingo and vocals gives him the Midas touch on every track he lays his vocal down on.
With his collaborations and his record label The Free Minded, rostering the coolest artist around, once you listen to Spaceships On The Blade you will have entered the world of the "izm"
Artist: Larry June
Project: Spaceships On The Blade
Rating: 3.5/5
Album Highlights:
From Uncle Herm Pt4.
One thing you will alway hear on a Larry June Project is Uncle Herm. Uncle Herm blesses every intro with words of wisdom. His spoken word always motivational and inspirational. One of the originals to break hip hop in San Fransisco, A Larry June project wouldn't be the same unless is was blessed by Uncle Herm.
I'm Him
I'm Him comes in with Larry's signature sound. I just wanna point out that he's made a style of production solely linked to him that you'll start to think anyone else that raps over beats like the beats Cardo produces for Larry June is influenced by the Frisco Rapper. I'm Him is Larry at his best. His Ad-libs, phrases including the signature "Ey Ey Ey" catch your attention immediately and have you in that bounce mode. Larry then proceeds to let it be known where he's at in life and his status with his cool nonchalant flow seamlessly intertwined over the Production of a Cardo beat. When this duo team up its nothing short of a masterpiece. The chemistry between Cardo and Larry on this track sets the rest of the project up perfectly. If you didn't know, one thing Larry is known for is always blessing his audience with life lessons; "Everybody not with you forreal, put in that work and make time for your kids" With his love for smoothies, all the ingredients on this song blend well and make a well executed track.
Things You Do
Larry has found a way to create a different unique vibe for the women. "You bin hurt I can tell, you really like me but you scared". You can tell his target audience for women are those real down to earth, around the way, work for their money type of women. His style targets the everyday man so why not the everyday woman? This one will definitely have the ladies feeling sexy getting ready to go out or even just washing the dishes. Larry truly has a knack for making his music so relatable and this track does just that. With hip hop being at a place where the degrading of women is at an all time high, its refreshing to hear good music making women feel good about themselves and let them know they're still valued.
Tools of the game
Man! Probably the best way you could describe the aura and presence that is Larry June. Narrated by one of the most important and needed people in hip hop and black culture Wallo, he puts you right there in the passenger seat of Larry Junes 63 "Allow me to uh decorate your mind with some extraordinary shit man" and expressing what its like to be in the world of Larry June "All the track stars, they were all over him man, its like he was the last n*gga on earth" To have Wallo feature and do an interlude just shows you the type of time Larry is on. He's so different from these artist that are obsessed with trends. He is the trend.
I'll Make Time
My favorite song on the project. Jump in your car turn the speakers up and just cruise to this one. Another one for the ladies but the fellas will definitely be in a mood to talk to these women in that cool chilled demeanor. Just something about this one that has you feeling good. Its definitely a summer time classic and one that has longevity.
5.0 Chronicles
Another chilled, kick back, smoke a blunt to and just zone joint. Larry continues to hit you with lifestyle rap and with New Orleans Veteran Curren$y. Any time these two collab, there's always going to be waves. The way these two compliment each other on tracks is effortless and a reason they do so many tracks together. Lifestyle rap has a few top artist and these two juggernauts are definitely the few at the top.
Breakfast in Monaco
Lifestyle rap at its finest. The inspiration you feel listening to this track is undeniable. The way Larry brags on this one is so causal but its so real. It's not to put anyone down its just to understand where he's at in life and he gives you the feeling and words that show you it's attainable for you also. Sparkling water and smoothies get more mentions than Vodkas and Tequilas but on this one he has a right to talk his sh*t "Escargot I'm in Paris talking big numbers, sport band on the chrono Patek talking big numbers"
I could list what I love about every track but that just me being a true admirer of the artist's music and the person as a whole.
A few more honorable mentions:
Larrys Diner
Spaceships And Orange Juice
Appreciate It All
For Tonight
Don't Check Me
Larry June is truly a one of a kinda artist and an artist that deserves all the success coming his way. He brings something completely different but way cooler to the scene. The smoothie sipper just can't miss.
